My niece bought a "Mediterranean Diet" book...
I laughed my *** off...

I said to Katie..
Are you stupid ?
She said no.. why ?

Then I asked, what do you think "Mediterranean" is ?

She said its a sea and geographical region that spans Southern Europe, the coast of the far western area of the Middle East, and North Africa..

Then I said...
Good...
Now tell me what countries in Southern Europe have a Coastline in the Mediterranean sea..

She said.. Spain, France, Italy, Greece and Turkey..

Then I said....

Well Here is an example of a "Mediterranean diet"...

I made a Pizza and a bowl of spaghetti, a Pizza, an Italian Cream Cake...
a Bowl of Ratatouile.. I went an got a bottle of Orangina and a cup of Yoplait....
And a Lamb Gyro.

While we had that stuff for dinner...
I said...
Hey, how do you like the "Mediterranean Diet" ?

lmfao !

Oh dear. It's unfortunate that Katie has an @sshole for an aunt. Hopefully she didn't get any of your genes.

The "Mediterranean Diet" refers to the costal regions of those countries. Pizza, etc. are dishes from different regions, not along the coast.

The "Mediterranean Diet" is high in seafood, vegetables, nuts, and olive oil. It does not have much bread (or carbs at all for that matter) as grain comes from regions further inland.

So ironically, ratatouille IS considered a Mediterranean dish because it's basically just a casserole made of sliced vegetables.

By the way, "Yoplait" is about as French as "French Dressing."

Oh dear. You thought up a few cliché dishes, and pretend to have captured the essence of Mediterranean eating?

The joke's on you. There are certainly discrepancies between the Mediterranean Diet and the way people in Mediterranean countries tend to eat (the prevalence of white bread over wholegrain products being one of them) but you are very misinformed if you think Italians typically live on pizzas and bowls of spaghetti or Greeks on lamb gyro. At best you're talking about Mediterranean fast food.

What you claim to have done is like me buying someone a supersize McMeal and claiming it's how all Americans eat all the time.

I've traveled extensively in France and Greece and have visited Italy, Turkey and Spain (where I was robbed two out of two times and won't be going back). They do indeed consume mass quantities of olive oil and cheese, along with fresh seasonal veggies, they are also physically active. Most of Western Europe has robust public transportation systems. But these come with stairways in subway systems, bus stops a block to two away from your targeted address and usually a brisk walk to get on the bus, tram or train. Old timers on the Greek Islands tend to vineyards, olive trees and homesteads and get adequate exercise. So it's not all diet. Exercise plays a significant role in the med lifestyle.
